Parental Education Participation as a Moderated Mediation Effect on the Influence of Academic Stress on Career Maturity via School Life Satisfaction in Korean High School Students

The problem and the aim of the study. South Korea’s intensely competitive and exam-driven educational environment places considerable academic stress on high school students, potentially impeding their career development and psychological adjustment. Despite the recognized significance of school life satisfaction and parental education participation, their roles as mediators and moderators in the relationship between academic stress and career maturity remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the relationship between academic stress and career maturity among South Korean high school students, focusing on the mediating role of school life satisfaction and the moderated mediation effect of parental education participation.

Research methods. The study used data from the 16th wave of the Korean Welfare Panel Study (KOWEPS), drawing on a sample of 325 high school students. Using SPSS 24.0 and PROCESS macro 4.2 (Model 4 and Model 7), mediation and moderated mediation analyses were conducted to examine the hypothesized relationships.

Results. Mediation analysis showed that school life satisfaction fully mediated the relationship between academic stress and career maturity (indirect effect = -0.047, 95% CI: -0.075 to -0.021). The direct effect was not significant. Moderated mediation analysis further revealed that the indirect effect varied by the level of parental involvement, with stronger negative effects at moderate and high levels (e.g., M+1SD: effect = -0.057, 95% CI: -0.098 to -0.022).

Conclusion. This study emphasizes the role of school life satisfaction in the relationship between academic stress and career maturity, with parental education participation moderating this effect. Interventions to improve school life satisfaction and promote autonomy-supportive parental engagement are essential for supporting career development in high-stress environments.
