Introduction. Grit affects the major commitment of students majoring in airline service. In addition, major commitment has a positive effect on the employment preparation behavior of students majoring in airline service. Growth mindset plays an important role that enforces the mediation of major commitment mediates between grit and employment preparation behavior. This study highlights the moderated mediation effect of growth mindset, demonstrating the full mediation effect among grit, major commitment, and employment preparation behavior.
Methods. The participants in this study consisted of 284 students majoring in airline service from three universities. The sample included freshmen (19.7%), sophomores (39.1%), juniors (29.6%), and seniors (11.6%). Data were analyzed using SPSS Win version 21.0 to perform frequency analyses, reliability testing, and correlation analysis. For the moderated mediation analysis, Model 7 of the PROCESS macro version 4.3 was employed as the primary statistical method.
Results. First, grit had a significant positive effect on major commitment (β= .2917, p< .001), and major commitment had a significant positive effect on employment preparation behavior (β= .4291, p< .001). However, the effect of grit on employment preparation behavior did not significant (β = .1274, p>.05). The interaction term between grit and growth mindset had a significant effect on employment preparation behavior (β= -.1215, p < .05). Second, growth mindset was found to have conditional indirect effects on the relationship between grit and employment preparation behavior through major commitment that were significant (p < .001) when the growth mindset values were low (M-1SD), mean (M), or high (M+1SD), respectively. Therefore, the moderated mediation effect of growth mindset was verified.
Conclusions. This study verified the positive effect of grit on employment preparation behavior through the full mediation of major commitment. The results of this study indicate that students’ growth mindset should be fostered and reinforced with the goal of increasing airline service major students’ grit and major commitment, resulting in improving their employment preparation behavior.
