The correlation of teaching skills and teachers’ professionalism towards students’ achievement in Indonesia

Introduction. Teachers play a pivotal role in improving students’ academic achievements worldwide, as emphasised by global initiatives from UNESCO and other international bodies. These efforts underscore that teaching skills and professionalism are essential to delivering quality education in any context. Within this global framework, Indonesia presents a relevant case for examining the relationship between teaching skills, teacher professionalism, and student performance, offering insights that may inform educational strategies internationally.

Study participants and methods. The research was conducted with a sample of 100 elementary school teachers from Serang, Banten, Indonesia. A quantitative, correlational research design was employed, utilizing descriptive statistics and inferential statistical techniques, including regression analysis. The data were collected through Likert-scale questionnaires assessing teaching skills, teacher professionalism, and student performance.

Results. The analysis revealed clear and compelling evidence of the link between teaching quality and student outcomes. A moderate yet significant correlation was found between teaching skills and teacher professionalism (r = 0.548, p < 0.05), suggesting that stronger teaching abilities are closely tied to higher professional standards. Teaching skills were also positively associated with student achievement (r = 0.557, p < 0.05), while the most pronounced relationship emerged between teacher professionalism and student achievement (r = 0.794, p < 0.05), highlighting the pivotal role of professionalism in driving learning success. Regression analysis further revealed that improvements in teaching skills significantly enhanced professionalism (β = 0.648, p < 0.001), and that both teaching skills (β = 0.703, p < 0.001) and professionalism (β = 0.849, p < 0.001) were strong predictors of student performance.

Conclusion. This study highlights the critical role of teaching skills and professionalism in improving student academic performance. It suggests that efforts to enhance teachers’ pedagogical abilities and professionalism will likely lead to better educational outcomes. Policy recommendations include providing ongoing teacher training and professional development to boost teaching quality and student success.
